I started by forming a tulip shape on the wheel, dried and trimmed them upside down. Then I hand carve the foot and faces of the mountain. Using a rock I picked up at the crag, I hammer into the facets, creating a natural rock texture.

I dry the greenware for a week before firing for 13 hours in the kiln to cone 04.

I unload the kiln 24 hours after loading it, waiting for temperatures to cool from cone 5, 1940 degrees to under 200.

Then, I sand the foot smooth, and sponge the now bisqueware of any kiln dust. I wax the foot. After I wash the rock texture with iron oxide, I sponge it over with  matte amber glaze. This gives the features depth. The iron flecks in speckled buff add to the ruggedness.

I ladle in celadon glaze and dip the outside. As the celadon runs and dries at different thicknesses, it pools to create depth in the clouds and skies.

A final firing at cone 5, to 2160 degrees, and 24 hours later, 3 weeks after I began on the wheel, I hold in my hands what I have visualized.

Celadon mountain cups. Stoneware, speckled buff.
